These embarrassing patches of rough, reddened, intensely itchy skin can keep eczema sufferers from enjoying their lives. Dr. Tomcik's primary goal is to identify sensitivity to irritants such as soaps, detergents, shampoos, pets, mold, pollen and disinfectants. For some children, the condition resolves by the age of two. Treatment includes education of parents as well as young patients in learning to avoid irritating substances. Effective hypoallergenic lubricants for the skin as well as the appropriate, safe topical cortisone creams and ointments are used. Occasionally, appropriate topical and or systemic antibiotics may be used in severe cases.
